MIRI: The Miri City Council (MCC) has made improvements to the Piasau bridge junction to ease traffic flow, especially during peak hours.

Mayor Adam Yii said a U-turn at the end of the bridge would be evaluated.

The bridge previously had a small crossroad and it was sealed due to being an accident prone area.

“We have done some modifications here and we will see how it works. There is no perfect solution because the area here is very confined, so we actually do not have much room to change or improve.

“The traffic congestion will definitely still be there because of the large number of cars.

“The road users cannot use the opening anymore so they will need to turn left and go across the bridge for the U-turn which we have put in place.”

Yii noted that road users intending to go to the commercial centre must utilise the U-turn instead of using the opening on the bridge as it was a danger to safety.

“One of the dangerous things happening here is that a lof of cars would use the opening to go to the commercial centre. The cars would sometimes go against the traffic.

“I think if needed, we will close the opening for safety reasons. This is why we want to inform road users to go across the bridge and use the U-turn as well as the traffic light.”

He also said that improvement works would be carried out on another access road in front of Miri Departmental Store, excepted to start after the Gawai celebrations.
