MUKAH: A Chinese community leader here has expressed concern over the mass pig deaths in Durin (Sibu) and Bintangor (Sarikei) recently.

Kapitan Kang Boon Eong, 57, said the pigs’ death could affect consumers and posed a threat to the local livestock industry.

“While were still grappling with Covid-19 especially the new Omicron variant, we also have to be careful with the recent development happening in the livestock industry in the two nearby divisions.”

He suggested that for the coming Chinese New Year, meat consumers could consider reducing the intake of pork and chicken following the recent event.

“Perhaps, meat consumers could also consider taking vegetarian food as this will certainly help in avoiding the possible effect from infected animals” he told New Sarawak Tribune on Saturday (Jan 8).

Kang was commenting on the mass deaths of pigs in Durin which was reported in local dailies on Friday (Jan 7).

On the disposal of pig carcasses, he hoped that it would be dealt with properly, as improper disposal would affect the environment.

He said improper disposal could cause undesirable effect on the environment, especially if it was done in the vicinity of water catchment areas.

The mass pig deaths issue had also caught the attention of Dudong assemblyman Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

Tiong, who is also Bintullu MP, called on all pork dealers and those whose food products were linked with the supply of pork, not to get the supply from unconfirmed sources.
