KUCHING: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sarawak hopes that the suspect in the murder of Bill Kayong, would be investigated thoroughly in order to bring closure to the case.
Party information chief, Abun Sui Anyit, said this is to enable the family of the deceased to get the best possible justice for the despicable act.
“PKR Sarawak takes note of the positive development in Bill Kayong’s murder case which hopefully will be solved with the arrest of the suspect, Koong Siang Ming.
“We express our appreciation and congratulate the police for their continuous efforts in trying to solve the case,” he said when commenting on the arrest of Koong who was brought back to Miri from Kuala Lumpur on Friday.
Kayong was PKR Miri Branch secretary when he was murdered in a mafia-style shooting at a traffic light intersection in Kuala Baram on June 21, 2016.
“Bill Kayong’s struggle during his life was to take care of the customary land cases faced by the people of Sarawak, especially the Dayaks where their customary land overlapped with the licences of oil palm plantation companies,” he said.
The PKR information chief said as the case was still under investigation by the police, the public should refrain from making speculations that could interfere with the police investigations.
The suspect was flown in to Miri International Airport on a Royal Malaysian Police Air Wing aircraft from Kuala Lumpur and was escorted to Miri Central police station by a team of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) personnel on Friday.
Miri police chief ACP Hakemal Hawari said the suspect is being detained at the Central Police station (CPS) lock-up for further investigation.
It is understood that Koong had been hiding in China before the authorities arrested and deported him back to Malaysia due to his expired passport.
The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code which carries the mandatory death penalty.
