SIBU: The Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Kuching is currently in the process of managing the placement of Indonesian workers to come back and work in Sarawak.

According to the Consul-General of the Republic of Indonesia in Kuching Raden Sigit Witjaksono, almost 80,000 Indonesians had returned to Indonesia since the outbreak of COVID-19.

“Our main responsibility is to protect the people and provide assistance to Indonesians working in Sarawak. In Sibu for instance, the consulate general visits the farms two to three times a month to help process Indonesian workers’ documents.

“What I understand is that most of the problems faced by our workers are passport issues. Hence, we encourage the workers to be hired with the right procedures, documents, passports and permits, and visas.

“This is better for us in order to make our cooperation with the industry sustainable,” he said during a press conference here yesterday (Jan 20).

Regarding the development of the new Indonesian capital in Nusantara, Raden said the main area of approximately 6,000 hectares was now 15 per cent completed.

“Starting next year, the Indonesian government plans to move 100,000 civil servants to the new capital from 2024 to 2029.

“Countries such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia, China, Japan, Korea, and 21 European countries have expressed their interest in collaborating and investing in the new capital.

“The theme of the new capital is eco-friendly areas; meaning 70 per cent is a green area and 30 per cent is developed for offices and other purposes,” he said.

In the same press conference, he also mentioned that he has plans to organise a media visit to the new capital soon.

Raden shared that he and his family will be spending the Chinese New Year celebrations in Sibu this year.
