MIRI: Miri Country Music Fest curator, Gracie Geikie, has mooted the establishment of an academy for country music here to help promote the genre among the young.

“In this regard, we are hoping to get support from the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak for allocations to form the academy,” she said during a press conference.

Deputy Minister for Tourism Creative Industry and Performing Arts I Datuk Sebastian Ting who was also present lauded Gracie’s academy idea.

“It’s a good idea, perhaps a proposal could be submitted to the Ministry so that we can consider,” he said.

Earlier, Ting in his welcoming speech, expressed confidence that the fest would rope in more festival-goers.

“With the re-opening of borders and the lifting of travel restrictions, Sarawak has been steadily getting back on track by hosting our international music festivals, and it has been great to reconnect with the outside world through our live physical events,” he said.

MCMF has enjoyed great popularity as the first international country and western music festival in Malaysia, since its inception in 2014.
The two-day event this year kicked off on Friday at the Eastwood Valley Golf & Country Club.

A new addition to the fest this year is the creation of a CSR project called “The Buku Project”.

It is aimed at giving an opportunity to give back to the community by donating books for rural schools in Sarawak.

This year two schools at the Long Lama and Long Latei areas will be the beneficiaries of this legacy project.
