BAU: Tasik Biru is set to see more hawker and trader stalls to boost the local economy.

Its assemblyman Datuk Henry Harry Jinep said Tasik Biru lacked such amenities for a place now considered a booming tourist hotspot.

“Tasik Biru now receives a lot of visitors. As more comes in, more businesses are also coming in as well.

“There is a lack of spaces for business at the moment, and we have discussed this matter with Bau District Council (MDB) to provide temporary spaces until a permanent solution comes up.

“Note that the temporary spaces are only for traders registered with MDB so that we know how many are doing business in the Tasik Biru area,” said Henry after visiting the proposed site for SK Segong on Thursday (Feb 3).

“Many are doing business and the government supports this as it creates a positive impact on their lives as well as the economy.

“Sometimes, there are those coming from outside Bau – Kuching, Padawan, Penrissen.”

On whether or not business activities in Serikin be brought to the Tasik Biru area, Henry said it was better for them to stay there as many traders there are from Kalimantan, Indonesia.

“That is why it is important to set up an immigration, customs, quarantine and security (ICQS) checkpoint in Serikin.

“They can come into our country using their passports to travel in Sarawak or limited travel pass where they can only travel until Bau or Batu Kitang area,” said the Assistant Minister for Transport II.

Henry also said that Bau could be an international transit town as many of them would pass through the town when going to Kuching.

He mentioned that there would be hotels, and museum, that had been approved, as well as a golf course being planned, including a convention centre.

“We will have the Bidayuh Culture Centre, which can accommodate around 800 to 1,000 people, so that Bau can be a desstination for mini conventions.”
