‘PMSB has trained over 8,000 seafarers’

SIBU: Pelita Mas Laut Sdn Bhd (PMSB) has produced and provided training to more than 8,000 local and outside seafarers who are involved in various categories and positions, including flatfoot, deck and engine officers, captain, and chief engineer of the ship.

This was according to PMSB managing director Masni Amit, when speaking at the company’s 15th Anniversary event held at Sibu Islamic Complex hall here yesterday.

In conjunction with the event PMSB inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Sing Kiong Hong Dockyard held at Sibu Islamic Complex hall here yesterday.

PMSB was represented by Masni, while Sing Kiong Hock Dockyard Sdn Bhd was represented by its chairman, Dato Albert Ling Kiong Ping. Assistant Minister of Housing Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah witnessed the MoU signing ceremony.

Speaking at a press conference after the ceremony, Masni said the purpose of the MoU singing ceremony between PMSB and Sing Kiong Hock Dockyard Sdn Bhd is to providing practical training for 70 trainees at the dockyard.

He also disclosed that PMSB would be signing more MoU with maritime companies in the state to provide platforms for practical training for its trainees.

“PMSB in the nearest future will be negotiating with the Bintulu Port Autority and a shipping company in Miri for the purpose. The hands-on training would certainly help the trainees in getting a job in the industry,” he said, adding that those who are good would be immediately employed upon their graduation,” he said.

In his speech earlier, Masni said PMSB which has been established since 15 years ago, began from a small training centre in Sibu.

Now, he said PMSB has spread its wing and crossing the South China Sea to open it branch in Kota Kinabalu Sabah in 2010 and other branch in Miri in 2011.

“Since 15 years ago, we have achieved various proud achievements, including with an increase of the percentage of local seafarers.

Some of the seafarers that PMSB produced not only sail around Asia but also entire Arab and American countries, he added.

Balingian Assemblyman Abdul Yakub Arbi, Political Secretary to the Chief Minister Abu Seman Jahwie, Assistant Director of Examination and Certification of Seafarers Marine Headquarters Malaysia Captain Sukhbir Singh Gopal Singh, Assistant Director of Industrial Control-Malaysia Marine Department Sarawak Region Marzuki Brahim, and Pelita Mas Laut Sdn Bhd Group Director Hamimah Abun were among those present.
