KUCHING: Despite the slim majority in Parliament and the challenges of reviving the economy in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has proven to be a survivor thus far, said Sarawak Business Federation secretary-general Jonathan Chai.

“You need to be someone who possesses a will of steel and some extraordinary charisma to do so,” he said when sharing his views on the prime minister in conjunction with his two-day visit to Sarawak today and tomorrow.

He said Muhyiddin’s Perikatan Nasional (PN) government deserved credit for putting in place a few rounds of economic stimulus measures since the outbreak of the pandemic.

“Those measures, especially the Wage Subsidy Programme and the Special Relief Fund (SRF) facilities with special interest rates, have essentially helped a lot of businesses to overcome the tough challenges posed by the lockdown or movement control order in our quest to contain the outbreak of the virus.”

He also noted that during Muhyiddin’s time as prime minister, Sarawak had managed to settle amicably with Petronas out of court on the issue of the state’s rights to collect State Sales Tax on petroleum products from the national petroleum company.

“That would generate sizeable revenue annually for Sarawak henceforth.”

Chai hoped that the federal government would prioritise Sarawak and provide it with a larger quota of Covid-19 vaccines, especially as the state had been recording among the highest number of cases of late.

“In addition, we are in dire need of more funding from the federal government to upgrade our basic infrastructure and internet connectivity facilities, especially in the rural and interior areas.”
