KUCHING: The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) is looking to issue pocket guides to food delivery riders on ways to properly handle emergency situations.

Sarawak Bomba director Khirudin Drahman said the handy tips could be disseminated through print or online to the riders as they are constantly on the road.

“Based on my observation, we often see them attending to emergency situations and (with the guide) able to take control of the situation and act accordingly,” he told the media after presenting certificates of appreciation to members of the public at the Sarawak Bomba headquarters here yesterday.

He said while it was commendable to provide assistance in emergencies, there are rights and wrongs to approaching certain situations, especially those that involved dangerous locations or fatal injuries.

“We don’t want them to unknowingly put themselves in harm’s way, which could end up in them being one of the victims.

“There are also certain cases where police action is required. For example, cases involving fatalities. Any attempts to assist at the scene can be seen as tampering with evidence.

“There are also cases where passers-by are in doubt of whether they want to help the victims.

“Therefore, Bomba will share the proper information to handle such situations through the pocket guides.

“It is important to understand what needs to be done to avoid causing delays in providing appropriate assistance to the victims.”

Khirudin said those with the proper knowledge on handling emergency situations are an extension of the department itself.

“Because firefighters will only be at the scene once a report is received. If those at the scene could act wisely prior to our arrival, it could reduce the impact of the incident.”

He added that similar initiatives would also be made involving bus drivers, public vehicles and others who could provide proper assistance during emergencies.
