KUCHING: Police once again teamed up with the Sarawak Electricity Supply Corporation (Sesco) to disconnect electricity supply to seven business premises acting as online gambling centres.

Kuching police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah said the operation was carried out today under the authority granted by Section 21A of the Open Gambling House Act 1953 (Act 289).

“The objective behind the implementation of this law is clear, to stem the rising tide of gambling activities, particularly in Kuching.

“According to the provisions outlined in Section 21A of the Act in question, any premises that have undergone electricity supply disconnection cannot have their supply restored without written permission from the district police chief,” said Ahsmon.

He stressed the importance of these measures in safeguarding the community against the detrimental effects of gambling.

From 2021 to 2024, he added, a total of 233 joint operations were conducted to disconnect electricity supply to both business premises and residential houses that were found to be operating online gambling activities.
