Police arrests man in viral road rage incident

BINTULU: Police here have arrested a local man for allegedly hitting and threatening a road user in front of an eatery along Mile 5, Jalan Bintulu-Miri last Tuesday (Nov 29).

The incident, which was recorded by a member of the public, had since gone viral on social media.

Bintulu OCPD Supt Batholomew Umpit said the suspect in his 30s was arrested on the same day after the victim lodged a police report.

The suspect is currently remanded for four days to facilitate investigations under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation and Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.

“Investigation found that the incident started in front of a petrol station where the suspect later tailed the victim to an eatery at Mile 5, Jalan Bintulu-Miri.

“The suspect followed the victim as he was dissatisfied with the victim for honking at him (the suspect),” he said in a statement.

Following that, the suspect then scolded and punched the victim in the face.

Background checks found that the suspect had prior criminal records under Section 506/427 of the Penal Code as well as Section 186 of the Penal Code.

The police issued strict warnings against any criminal activity that could threaten public safety on the road.

Batholomew added that they will take stern actions to curb such activity to ensure public safety.
