KUCHING: Police here confirmed the arrest of a local man who was suspected of committing theft at a construction site in Masja area recently.

Kuching district police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah said the incident which happened on Aug 19, had gone viral in a 14-second video uploaded to Facebook.

He also confirmed that the suspect, who was apprehended by the public, had been handed over to the police.

However, claim saying that the suspect was beaten up during the arrest was untrue as there was no information that shows the suspect was beaten.

“The 30-year-old suspect is currently under remand until Aug 24 to facilitate investigations under Section 379 of the Penal Code.

“If convicted, the suspect can be sentenced to seven years in jail or, be fined or both,” he said.

Ahsmon reminded the public to not create any wild speculations into any incidents.
