PADAWAN: Two local men, who acted swiftly to assist an elderly woman in the snatch theft case at Taman Desa Wira and apprehended one of the suspects on Apr 22, were lauded by police here yesterday (Apr 29).
Kenny Ng Chau Seng, 46, and Chomson Gon, 30, were recognised for their courageous actions in aiding the victim who is in her late 50s and assisting law enforcement.
Acting Padawan police chief DSP Lim Jaw Shyong presented certificates of appreciation and souvenirs to the duo at the district police headquarters.
He pointed out that their spontaneous response showcased a genuine concern for others’ well-being, transcending personal interests in safeguarding both property and lives.
“Their prompt action and commendable demeanour serve as a shining example for all members of society.
“With that, I urge everyone to continue collaborating with the police in combating crime,” he said.
In an update on the Taman Desa Wira snatch theft case, Lim stated that the suspects were each sentenced to 10 years in prison and 10 lashes of the cane.
They pleaded guilty to charges framed under Section 394 of the Penal Code in the Sessions Court.
On Apr 22, the incident went viral on social media via a one-minute dashcam footage depicting the crime unfolding around 7.55am.
In the clip, one of the assailants could be seen grappling with the elderly woman’s handbag by the roadside while, another was on a motorcycle, seemingly ready to make a quick escape.
Two vehicles managed to block the suspects’ motorcycle and prevented their getaway, upon which the public got out of their vehicles to try and apprehend the thieves.
The first suspect was apprehended at the scene while, the other was picked up by Padawan Criminal Investigation Division (CID) along Jalan Airport Lama around 5pm on the same day.
