KUALA LUMPUR: Mongolian national Dr Shaariibuu Setev lodged a police report here yesterday seeking a fresh probe into the murder of his daughter Altantuya Shaariibuu who was killed in Malaysia 12 years ago.
He made the report at the Dang Wangi District Police headquarters, arriving there at 11.35 am with Ramkarpal Singh, the family lawyer.
Ramkarpal Singh said the report was made to request the police to reopen the case of the murder of Altantuya, a model.
“It is an ordinary police report. If there are new leads in the case, the police will look at them in their investigation. If others are found to have been involved in the murder, they will also be prosecuted,” he said to reporters at the police headquarters.
Altantuya is believed to have been killed and her body blown up with explosives at a secondary jungle in Mukim Bukit Raja, Klang, between 10 pm on October 19, 2006, and 1 am on October 20, 2006.
In 2009, former police Special Action Unit members Sirul Azhar Umar and Azilah Hadri were found guilty of Altantuya’s murder. The Court of Appeal overturned their sentences in 2013 but upon the prosecution’s appeal, they were upheld by the Federal Court.
However, Sirul fled to Australia where he was detained by the Australian Immigration at its detention centre in Sydney after Interpol issued a red notice on him. He has been at the detention centre since 2015. He is hoping to get asylum in Australia.
Shaariibuu, who has come to Malaysia to seek a fresh probe into his daughter’s murder, met Attorney-General Tommy Thomas on Tuesday and was expected to call on Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad yesterday. He said on Tuesday that he wanted to know who ordered the murder and the motive for the killing.
Ramkarpal Singh said the police should have called DSP Musa Safri, a former aide-de-camp (ADC) of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, as a witness during the Altantuya murder trial.
“Musa was a key witness and this should have been considered during the trial. Why was he not called? It was related to the important matter of the motive (for the killing). It was rather strange. It does not mean that the matter has ended,” he said.
Ramkarpal Singh said Shaariibuu had yet to give any statement to the police on the case.
“Shaariibuu will return to Mongolia tomorrow. This evening, I will arrange for a meeting with Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in Putrajaya,” he said.
Replying to a question, Ramkarpal Singh said Shaariibuu’s police report did not indicate any suspect in the murder. – Bernama
