KUCHING: The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) together with Petronas held a Road Tour programme today to inform the public that an ‘Ops Selamat’ will be held soon in conjunction with the coming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.

The programme organised by Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) together with the Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department (JPJKK) and Petronas, is a pre ‘Ops Selamat’ Advocacy Programme.

Here in Sarawak, the programme was held at selected Petronas petrol stations in Kuching, Padawan and Kota Samarahan districts.

Sarawak Crime Prevention and Community Safety chief SAC Wong Ing Fung when met by the media, said the ‘Ops Selamat’ advocacy programme is one of the effective methods by JSPT to protect and maintain the community’s safety and well-being throughout the operation.

“The main purpose of this programme is to inform the public that the police will be holding the 18th ‘Ops Selamat’ in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festive season for 10 days from Apr 29 to May 8.

“The police through the JSPT have collaborated with Petronas to further increase road safety awareness especially among motorcyclists and, increase public awareness to comply with the traffic laws and regulations.

“In addition, the programme will also involve the JPJKK which will implement campaigns such as Meet-and-Greets and Go-To-Safety-Point (GTSP) at selected petrol stations,” she said during the flag off ceremony of PDRM and Petronas Road Tour programme at Petronas petrol station in Matang Jaya.

On the Road Tour Advocacy programme, she explained that it is seen as a long-term plan by the JSPT, which is to provide advice to road users – focusing on groups of motorcyclists, especially P-hailing riders to be more compliant to the rules of the road and inculcate the attitude of always prioritising safety at all times, in order to reach their destination safely.

This is because motorcyclists are the ones who are at high risk of being involved in road accidents and record the highest number of deaths each year.

When asked further on GTSP at selected petrol stations, Wong said that it is an initiative of a strategic cooperation programme between PDRM and Petronas petrol stations, whose main purpose is to provide a place where the public can get help in any incident, be it emergencies, accidents or crimes.

The main objectives of the GTSP are to allow companies the opportunity to fulfil their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to the community; give the public the option to seek assistance during emergencies at the petrol station; involve the people to jointly reduce crime in their respective areas and at the same time, help victims who are in a state of emergency; and create awareness among the people that safety is a shared responsibility.
