KUCHING: As usual, those leaving home for Hari Raya Aidilfitri need not have to worry about their homes being unguarded as the police are always watching over residential and urban areas.

State Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said that crime prevention patrols are always increased and still going on even now as the festive season is still on.

“Those who go out of town should inform the police about their absence from home to enable security patrols to be conducted.

“Our mobile patrol vehicles (MPV) and motorcycle patrol units (URB) are always deployed to patrol residential and abandoned areas,” he said.

For the record, the public must submit their information to the police by filling in ‘Borang balik kampung’, which can be found at the nearest police station, or downloaded from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) portal – https://www.rmp.gov.my/, or it can be obtained from the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP) application – available in the Google Play Store and Apps Store.

In the form, they should state their holiday plans and details and the police will patrol to prevent crimes.

Azman assured that there would no roadblocks during the festive period as it would only cause heavy congestions.

Instead, they focus on 56 accident-prone and congested hotspots throughout Sarawak to prevent accidents and ensure smooth flow of traffic.

A 10-day operation codenamed ‘Op Selamat’ was carried out until yesterday (May 8) with the involvement of 750 police officers and personnel from various police departments, police stations and general duties throughout the state.

Sarawak Crime Prevention and Community Safety chief SAC Wong Ing Fung said whatever the season or occasion, people should try to have a second driver for long journeys because tiredness can cause sleepiness and even accidents.

“They should always adjust their speed to road conditions such as congested areas, crooked roads, corners, etc. so as to be able to stop during an emergency.
