SARIKEI: A civil servant was left RM17,000 poorer after falling prey to a scam involving a bogus policeman.

The incident happened on Wednesday (Jan 17) when the woman in her 30s, received a call from an individual who disguised as a ‘policeman’ from Peninsula Malaysia.

Acting Sarikei police chief DSP Benedict Faris said that the victim was informed by the suspect that she was implicated in a crime, specifically regarding the delivery of illegal goods.

“The suspect then instructed the victim to make a payment to settle the alleged case.

“She complied and made several money transactions amounting to RM17,000,” he said.

It was only after confiding in her husband that the victim realised she had been cheated.

The woman reported the incident to the police and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and dishonestly inducing the delivery of property.

If convicted, the offender can be sentenced with up to 10 years imprisonment, caning and a fine.
