KUCHING: A pontoon base will be built soon near the Sungai Pelaie Bridge for the convenience of the people of Kampung Salak.

Pantai Damai assemblyman Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said the building of a pontoon base had been proposed for the past four years.

However, he said there were some technical problems involving land issues that made construction impossible until recently when the landowner, Cahya Mata Sarawak (CMS), gave permission to build a road structure to be used in building the base.

“I have been in discussions with community leaders to find a suitable site to build a more permanent base.

“As a result of the discussions, I have contacted CMS to ask for its consent and CMS has given permission to use the land,” he said today, adding that the construction of this base has been included in the Pantai Damai rural transformation project (RTP) fund for 2020 and 2021.

He said a total of RM470,000 was allocated to build the pontoon base.

Although there were those who suggested a permanent concrete base to be built, but in terms of experience, the pontoon base is a more suitable structure because the base can go up and down according to the water level, he said.

Abdul Rahman added that there are also stalls for fishermen to unload their catch, therefore a pontoon-type base is more suitable.
