KUCHING: Gawai Dayak celebrants here who were unable to go home for the celebration were consoled with supplies of pork and beverages by the Democratic Action Party (DAP).

Its Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii said the goodwill gesture by the party was done in the spirit of ushering a new year of good harvest.

“Gawai is a celebration of unity, aspiration and hope. It marks the end of the rice harvest and ushers in another year of generous goodness.

“This year’s celebration will be different from previous years because of the conditional movement control order (CMCO),” said Dr Yii in a Facebook posting today.

He said because of the CMCO, many Dayaks were unable to celebrate the auspicious event with their close family and friends, unlike in years past.

“Although we cannot celebrate this festival together, may this token bring happiness to the homes of these people,” he said.
