SIBU: The Rejang Port Authority (RPA), in keeping with tradition, is conducting a peace offering ceremony at its wharf in conjunction with the Hungry Ghost Festival.

“This ceremony is held every year as per tradition. It’s to ensure the safety of all workers at the wharf, and so forth. It’s a way to appease the spirits, to protect all those who come into the port.

“We emphasise safety because ports are high-risk areas hence we have to make the place safe in however and whatever way we can,” RPA general manager Datin Helen Lim Hui Syan told the media on the sidelines of the ceremony today.

Lim explained that RPA had been having such a ceremony for the past 40 to 50 years and had been allocating a certain sum of money to buy the materials for the offering.

“During this 15th day of the Chinese lunar calendar of the 7th month, the spirits of the netherworld are coming out. During this time, it is a celebration for them so we are also respecting them.

“They (RPA workers) are happy that this tradition is continued because they have a sense of calm (after conducting the ceremony) when they work.

“A lot of things are not just physical, sometimes they involved spiritual and mental.”
