KUCHING: The forthcoming Parliamentary Services Act 2023, presently in the drafting phase, has garnered favourable feedback from members of both the Dewan Negara and Dewan Rakyat.

Senate President Tan Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar made this announcement following a briefing session on Monday (Sept 18). He noted that members from both houses of Parliament welcomed the revival of the 1963 Parliamentary Services Act, which aims to uphold the principle of the separation of powers within Malaysia.

“This bill can pave the way for the Federal Constitution’s requirements, thus strengthening the independence of the Malaysian Parliament as an entity separate from the government’s Executive Branch.

“We hope to present this bill during the Dewan Rakyat session in October 2023,” he added in a statement issued on Tuesday (Sept 19).

The briefing session, according to Wan Junaidi, provided members of both the Dewan Negara and Dewan Rakyat with early information, allowing them to collaborate on matters related to the presentation and debate of the bill in their respective chambers.

As per earlier media reports, he explained that the process of reintroducing the Parliamentary Services Act was currently at its second stage, involving the preparation of a Cabinet paper.

This paper would seek approval from the Dewan Negara and Dewan Rakyat Joint Council through the Attorney-General’s Chambers before being distributed to all relevant ministries and agencies and ultimately presented to the Cabinet.
