MIRI: A post-mortem conducted on two security personnel who were killed in a ‘waterhead’ phenomenon in Sungai Layun, Ulu Baram last Thursday determined that both had drowned.

“Both also suffered head injuries due to blunt force trauma caused by sticks and stones when being carried away by the water,” said Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Aidi Ismail when contacted.

The General Operations Force (GOF) personnel have been identified as Sergeant Simon Laja, 47, from Sungai Berangan, Sarikei; and Kemian, 50, who is a security guard at the Sabah-Sarawak gas pipeline (SSGP) at Layun Camp in Ulu Baram.

Aidi said both of them, along with six other individuals comprising GOF personnel and SSGP security guards, were resting near Sungai Layun in Ulu Baram during a patrol operation on Thursday.

The incident occurred around 8pm; the remaining six managed to escape and immediately carried out a search operation for the two.

The bodies were found around 3pm on Friday and were taken to Long Lama clinic before being transported to Miri Hospital.
