KUCHING: Electricity bill discounts of between five percent and 25 percent will be given to eligible Sarawak Energy customers for six months from April 1 to September 30.

The state-owned power supply company is expected to spend over RM166 million as part of its stimulus package through special discounts on electricity bills to cushion the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to Sarawak Energy, the measure was part of Prihatin Economic Stimulus Package and Sarawakku Sayang Special Assistance Package.

“Sarawak Energy fully supports both the state and federal governments in their efforts to reduce the economic burden of the people during this challenging time,” it said in a statement here yesterday.

The monthly electricity bill discount, it added, would be given to all eligible customers. Their bills would automatically be computed to the relevant discounts over the stipulated period, beginning from April.

“The discount package will be provided over a period of six months for electricity consumption from April 1, 2020 till September 30, 2020.

“The discounts of between five percent and 25 percent fall under the people-focused aid package of the federal government, the Economic Stimulus Package (Prihatin), with a further top up by Sarawak government’s own Sarawakku Sayang Special Assistance Package,” the statement said.

Highlighting that domestic households were eligible to receive the highest electricity discount rate of 25 percent, Sarawak Energy explained that the discount was a combination of two percent borne by the federal government and an additional 23 percent by the state government.

“Meanwhile, a discount of 15 percent will be given to commercial consumers and 10 percent and five percent respectively for industrial consumers.

“This measure will benefit 700,000 consumers from the domestic, commercial and industrial categories,” it added.
