KUCHING: Six premises here had their power supply cut off today (Mar 12) when they were found to be carrying out illegal gambling activities.

In a joint operation with Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB), the police carried out raids on various premises from 9am to 1pm.

Kuching police chief ACP Awang Din Awang Gani said the premises were found to be carrying out unlicensed gambling activities and pursuant to Section 21A of the Common Gaming House Act 1953, the police can order for the premises’ power supply to be cut off.

“Relevant operators are warned not to carry out any gambling activities without a license as the police will implement actions of the Prevention of Crime Act 1959 on those involved,” he said.

In the past four days (Mar 8 to 11), 12 raids were carried out which saw the arrest of 13 persons believed to be involved in illegal online gambling.

Investigations are being conducted under Section 4 (1) (c) of the Common Gaming House Act 1953 which provides for a fine of RM5,000 to RM50,000 and imprisonment for up to three years if convicted.

The case is still under investigation.
