KUCHING: Ministry of Youth and Sports staff were urged to uphold and cultivate the practice of integrity in all aspects of life, especially in their services.

Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said honesty, trust and integrity were actually intrinsic values that were the backbone and peg of economic progress.

He explained that in business for example, an honest and trustworthy trader would gain the trust of the customers and thus, they would continue to buy from the seller.

“As well as us as civil servants, with honesty, trust and high integrity, we will not easily get lured into a breach of trust by accepting bribes from outsiders.

“I believe, if the public sector’s system is honest then the road to achieve the nation’s goal will also be smooth, while on the other hand, if the system is crooked, then the road will also have many obstacles.”

He said this when officiating the Integrity Day celebration and launching the OACP (Organisation Anti-Corruption Plan) Workshop 2020 programme here on Monday (Sept 21).

Abdul Karim further said it was very important for the state’s civil servants to have a high spirit of appreciation and love for the country.

“Department and division heads should also be firm and intolerant of any employee or any other party involved in corruption related to the performance of duties regardless of rank, position and status.

“Every corruption that occurs also needs to be reported to the top management and the authorities,” said Abdul Karim, who was recently elected as the new president of the Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (Saberkas).

Among those present were Youth and Sports Assistant Minister Datuk Snowdan Lawan, the ministry’s acting permanent secretary Nancy Jolhi, Sarawak Sports Corporation chief executive officer Dr Ong Kong Swee, State Youth and Sports Department director Azura Sarbin, State Integrity and Ombudsman Unit (Union) Zulhairy Zaidel and internal auditor Zamzuri Mahdi.
