KUCHING: Paddlers from Bintawa are known for their talent and ability in winning boat races.
This has led them to be recognised and praised by the community, a people’s representative pointed out.
Utilities Assistant Minister (Water Supply) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said the success achieved by the village in the state’s iconic water sports event, the Sarawak Regatta had caught the eyes of many.
“We can see that all three villages (Bintawa Ulu, Bintawa Tengah and Bintawa Hilir) have their own boat racing teams.
“This has intimidated their rivals and has also led to the teams being hunted by corporate bodies due to their knack in winning series of races,” he said.
He made the comment when met after performing the Friday prayer at the Darul Islam Mosque in Kampung Bintawa Hilir on Friday (July 10).
Dr Abdul Rahman who is also Pantai Damai assemblyman said apart from being successful paddlers, the villagers from Bintawa are also skilled racing boat makers.
“Such skill needs to be promoted in order to become a tourism product while increasing the income of the local people,” he said.
More young people have also shown interest in boat racing, noting the increasing participation of the youth every time a regatta event is held, he added.
“We can see that every time a regatta is run, many young people are participating.
“I hope the involvement of young people should always be supported and encouraged in beneficial and healthy sports as well as leisure activities like this,” he said.
