Prime Minister's Office

KUCHING: Despite the spectrum of opinions with regard to who should be appointed as the next Prime Minister, the unanimous and prevailing hope among Sarawakians is for the current political crisis to be resolved soon and for a capable candidate to be chosen to lead the nation and prioritise the people.

David Xavier Hii Chin Loung

Sarawak Community Policing Association (SCPA) secretary David Xavier Hii Chin Loung, 37, said the current political crisis had come at a very bad time indeed, with Covid-19 infections reaching an all-time high in Malaysia and Sarawak.

“We can only hope that this political turmoil will be resolved soon and that the new Prime Minister and federal government can devise an exit strategy from this pandemic, guiding Malaysians to adjust to the new norm and begin learning to live with Covid-19. Life must go on,” he said.

He believed that many Sarawakians would be wondering if the new Prime Minister would have Sarawak’s rights and interests at heart.

“Over time, again and again, there were assurances that Sarawak will be treated as an equal partner pursuant to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), but until now we have not seen the return of Sarawak’s autonomy rights.

“I believe many would like to see a Prime Minister from Sabah or Sarawak in the future,” he told New Sarawak Tribune.

He said the candidate selected to be the country’s new Prime Minister must be a person of absolute integrity. He added that this candidate should always think of the future of the country first as opposed to self-interests.

“He must be a person committed to remove corruption from the system as corruption can destroy the legitimacy of a nation. The new Prime Minister must also have racial and religious tolerance as this is a very sensitive issue in Malaysia; he should have zero tolerance for any behaviour which incites or encourages racial and religious hatred,” said Hii.

Leandro Mcrae

Admin executive Leandro Mcrae, 25, echoed similar hopes for the current political crisis to be fixed immediately as it had disturbed the wellbeing of the country and its people.

“The crisis must be solved with the right solutions and it must be ensured that the same issues do not repeat in the future,” he said.

He felt that many Sarawakians, especially the younger generation, were not very particular as to who would be selected as the new Prime Minister.

“Some Sarawakians just don’t really care about what happens in West Malaysia, especially the youths. I hope that youths will start to care more about the country and start to realise the importance of registering as voters,” he said.

He emphasised that the candidate selected to become the next Prime Minister must know how to take care of the people and must ensure that the people always come first.

“There is no point to have power but care less about the people. The new Prime Minister must be fair as well; what West Malaysians receive must be provided to East Malaysians as well,” he said.

Aina Yeo

Meanwhile, 25-year-old marketing executive Aina Yeo pointed out that the current political instability was a huge concern not only due to its impact on the people but also on the nation’s economy.

She opined that many Sarawakians were particular on the matter of who would be selected as the new Prime Minister.

“Everyone wants a leader who will take care of the country without forgetting to take care of the rakyat.

“Based on the current Covid-19 pandemic, I believe the new Prime Minister should be able to make wise and strong decisions in order to maintain the stability of the political and socioeconomic circumstances of the country,” she said.

She said the new Prime Minister should put the people first and also be stern and assertive when it came to political tactics that arise from time to time.

Alistair Ting

Real estate negotiator Alistair Ting, 28, pointed out that the nation’s political scenario had never been so disastrous.

He expressed his view the Covid-19 pandemic had been a real test for the government’s efficiency and competence, and had revealed the true colours of each political party as well as the ruling government over the last two years.

He said if the behaviour of fighting for power and position continued among the country’s leaders, the people would continue to suffer especially during the current Covid-19 pandemic which has impacted the people’s wellbeing as well as multiple sectors.

“I find that some Sarawakians are still particular with regard to who will be appointed as the next Prime Minister while some have given up,” he said.

Nevertheless, he said the people certainly hoped for the best candidate to become Prime Minister.

“We need someone with strong family values, someone who puts the citizens and the nation before himself. Integrity and honesty are important virtues in the cutthroat world of politics,” he remarked.
