Prayers allowed in mosques throughout Sarawak from Tuesday

KUCHING: Weekly Friday and daily prayers in mosques and suraus are now allowed in the state from Tuesday (June 9) during the recovery movement control order (RMCO) period.

Sarawak Islamic Council (SIC) president Datuk Misnu Taha said the number of congregants will be limited for 406 mosques and suraus.

He said for the Friday prayers will be allowed from June 12 and the daily prayers from June 9. 

“Beginning June 12, the Sarawak State Mosque (Masjid Jamek) allows 100 people to attend the Friday prayers and 40 people for the daily prayers.

“For divisional districts and sub-districts mosques, 50 people are allowed for the Friday prayers and 40 people for the daily prayers,” he said in a press conference on Monday (June 8).

For Masjid Kariah, only 40 people are allowed for both Friday and daily prayers.

“For Surau Berjumaat, 40 people are allowed to attend the Friday prayers and for the daily prayers, 20 people.”

Minsu said Masjid Kariah without SKIM and surau will allow only 20 people for the daily prayers.

“Those going to mosques and suraus must strictly adhere to the standard operating procedure (SOP) that has been implemented.

“The mosque committee must also ensure that the SOP is complied with. At the same time, officers from the Islamic Affairs Department Sarawak (Jais) will monitor all mosques and suraus across the state,” he added.
