KUCHING: Islamic scholars and experts have been urged to conduct further research to enhance the management of wakaf (waqf) assets in Sarawak.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said there are assets particularly lands owned by Muslims which can be value-added through the waqf system.

“I think from an Islamic perspective and in terms of waqf, we can find a solution to effectively manage these assets as there are a lot of abandoned lands.

“Neglecting proper management of the land would result in wastage and it is like you don’t appreciate the gift from God,” he said at the launch of the International Seminar on Islamic Education at Raia Hotel and Convention Centre here on Saturday (June 17).

To make use of the resources available in Sarawak, he said he had researched on algae which can grow in an environment that has carbon dioxide, sunlight and enough water.

“In Sarawak, most of the Muslims reside near the coast, and this means that the algae can be cultivated within the coastal area and at the same time algae itself can be a source of oil.

“With this, we also share this (knowledge) with the non-Muslims as they too can grow algae on their land, including rubber and oil palm,” he said.

He said such initiatives would contribute to the state’s economic growth, particularly by emphasising on a new economy that is based on renewable energy sources.

On a related note, Abang Johari highlighted the importance of striking a balance between development and environmental considerations.

“Therefore, I invite all Muslims especially Islamic scholars, to continue to find ways to tackle the issues of climate change that is happening in the world today,” he said.

He also said there is a need to nurture more Muslim scholars who possess expertise in various fields and use Islamic philosophy as a source of inspiration and encouragement.
