KUCHING: The Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (Saberkas) has been urged to continue to be open and cooperate with any party for the betterment of the youth in the state.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this is because at the end of the day, the aim is to nurture a vibrant youth population and foster a prosperous community.

“Saberkas was formed in 1973 and has also gone through many transitions, not only in terms of programmes, but also the transition of leadership.

“The leadership until today has seen Saberkas continue to remain relevant, even more empowering its role in the development of today’s young generation as well as being one of the main agents in the effort for racial unity,” he said.

Abang Johari said this in a speech read by Saberkas president Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah during the opening of Saberkas’ 17th Triennial General Meeting (TGM) here on Tuesday (Dec 5).

He said in the effort to ensure Saberkas continues to stay relevant to the youth, there must be leadership transition and done in the best way while maintaining mutual understanding in the youth organisation.

“Therefore, Saberkas also continues to give opportunities and space to senior leadership to become mentors to new leadership in the future.

“This is so that Saberkas continues to be consistent as a major youth organisation that produces many key leaders in Sarawak,” he said.

He added the programmes by Saberkas have also undergone a proper transition in line with the changing interests and current demands of today’s youth.

“This is the role of Saberkas to continue to cater to the interests and needs of the youth in Sarawak from the past to the present,” he said.

“Saberkas has already reached 50 years since its establishment, and certainly has a lot more to achieve.”

Meanwhile, the TGM saw a huge participation with 456 delegates and observers from 78 Saberkas branches throughout Sarawak.
