KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg received a courtesy call from representatives of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here on today (Aug 17).

The delegation, led by IEM Sarawak president Ir Prof Dr Norlida Buniyamin, engaged in discussions regarding strategies for implementing programmes to address sea level rise (SLR) in Sarawak.

Prof Norlida pointed out that Sarawak is proactively addressing the issue of SLR by allocating funds to protect coastal areas.

“If SLR is not managed, coastal regions will suffer from erosion, leading to substantial damage such as roads breaking and rising water levels during monsoons,” she told the media after the courtesy call.

Meanwhile, former IEM Sarawak chairman Datuk Ir Janang Bungsu highlighted the strong support from the Sarawak government for IEM’s efforts in tackling SLR challenges.

He mentioned that the Sarawak government has allocated an initial fund of RM70mil, with an additional RM30mil for related projects.

IEM also reported that the coastal areas of Sarawak have demonstrated positive outcomes since the initiation of this initiative five years ago.

Janang added that the government provides full support to Sarawak’s engineers in their pursuit of further education to develop measures that protect coastal areas from erosion linked to rising sea levels.
