Premier to address World hydropower Congress

KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg will be among esteemed speakers at the 2023 World Hydropower Congress in Bali.

The World Hydropower Congress, which takes place from Oct 31 to Nov 2, is set to be a platform that turns climate ambition into action at the highest level.

Bringing together more than 1,000 decision makers, innovators and experts from industry, governments, finance, civil society and academia, the congress will provide a stage for high-level policy statements, recommendations and commitments that will influence the global growth of sustainable hydropower.

President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo will deliver a keynote address at the opening ceremony of the congress on Tuesday (Oct 31).

This will be followed by speeches from esteemed guest speakers including Abang Johari, Indonesia Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arifin Tasrif, president director of PT PLN (Persero) Darmawan Prasodjo, president designate of the International Hydropower Association (IHA) and former Prime Minister of Australia Malcom Turnbull among others.

Meanwhile, Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) chief executive officer Datuk Sharbini Suhaili is among the speakers at the plenary session on powering sustainable growth.

The session will set the stage for the Congress, showcasing the important role that sustainable hydropower plays in helping governments provide opportunities for their citizens whilst meeting net-zero objectives.

The session’s objectives are to highlight hydropower’s crucial role in powering the sustainable growth with concrete examples as well as to outline the interconnected challenges of fostering economic and industrial growth to improve standards of living alongside delivering on net zero ambitions and how hydropower can enable both.

Besides that, the session aims to present high-level insight from countries that are central to these challenges and are embracing sustainable hydropower in their growth strategies.

The session will also present high-level insight from hydropower industry leaders on the barriers to investment and development.

For the record, Indonesia is the host for the 2023 World Hydropower Congress following its successful G20 presidency in 2022.
