KUCHING: The state government is set to announce its exploration of a new source for the production of green energy.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this will be announced next month and is expected to bring positive developments for the state and its people.

“I will announce a study that we have successfully explored, and this has a connection with green energy which I think in the long run will provide more revenue to the state.

“This is a breakthrough from the point of view of green and renewable energy which is very must required by the world today,” Abang Johari told reporters when met during his open house on the first day of Hari Raya at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here today.

Apart from algae, he also mentioned that the study involved a plant species that has not been extensively researched.

“Regarding this particular plant, presently only Sarawak is producing it. Therefore, it is possible that the plant is indigenous to the region,” he said, while adding that the plant could also contribute to climate change.

“I am also sure that with this study, we will not only benefit from green energy but also in terms of medicine,” Abang Johari said, while also expressing hope that the study would encourage Sarawakian scientists to explore new fields.

He also announced the addition of more scientists at the Sarawak Biodiversity Centre.

The Premier also highlighted Sarawak’s success in producing wind energy using solar hybrid technology, and its potential to contribute significantly to renewable energy production.

More than 5,000 guests, including state leaders, attended the open house hosted by the Premier and his wife Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang.

The event was also graced by Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian.
