KUCHING: Satok residents, particularly those living in low-lying areas, have been told to get ready for floods.

Satok assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki said on Saturday (Jan 8) this advice had been given to the residents.

“We are ready,” he said.

Before that, Ibrahim officiated at the launch of Satok Flood Disaster Relief Committee’s logistical supplies at Kampung Kudei Lama’s multipurpose hall, Jalan Rubber Barat.

Meanwhile, Penghulu of Kampung Kudei Lama, Kudei Baru and Kampung Maong, Mohamed Maraji, said that preparations had been made with all the relevant agencies.

He said the community leaders in the Satok constituency had been briefed on what to do in case of floods.

“We face floods every year. Depending on weather conditions, sometimes the situation is under control and sometimes it becomes dangerous enough to require evacuation of people.

“For the low-lying areas especially, if the rain does not stop for two consecutive days, we have to prepare for the floods,” he said, adding in such a situation, some 70 to 80 houses would be badly affected.

He added that the community normally would receive assistance from the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Satok Service Centre and other authorities such as the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) and police.

Kampung Segedup Penghulu Sulaiman Awi said that the preparation for his village area included setting up the Flood Management Committee which consisted of those from the Kampung Segedup Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) and Neighbourhood Watch (KRT).

“In addition to that, Kampung Segedup will also be receiving additional two boats that are powered by engines,” he said.

Sulaiman added there were more than 3,000 residents in Kampung Segedup but only those living in certain zones, namely, Zone 7, Zone 8, Zone 13, Lorong 12A, Lorong 12 and Lorong 2 would be affected by the floods.

“The flood that occurs in Kampung Segedup is still controllable but those living in Lorong 12, Lorong 12A and Lorong 13 will require boats to get out of the village when the road is disconnected due to the floods,” he said.

Head of Kampung Kudei Baru Iban, Sangi Abu, said the community leaders had attended a meeting with the PBB Satok Service Centre and District Office on the flood preparation.

“At the JKKK level, we are ready for the floods in the village,” she said.

“Kampung Kudei Baru Iban has 430 residents and half of them will be affected by the floods,” she said.
