Prepare to evacuate, riverine folk advised

SIBU: The people especially those living in riverine villages here are urged to be extra vigilant during the rainy season.

Sibu Resident Charles Siaw, who gave this advice yesterday hoped those riverine villagers would keep close watch on the river water level and be prepared to evacuate their homes in the event of flooding.

“Do also keep important documents in a safe place,” he said when contacted by the New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.

Meanwhile, several low-lying areas in the outskirts of Sibu District were inundated by floodwater due to high tide and several days of incessant rain.

According to a report from the Sibu Division Disaster Management and Relief Committee Secretariat, the water level was receding and the situation is currently under control.

The report stated that the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM)’s observation as at 10.50pm on Friday night noted that the water level at Jalan Rambutan, Jalan Berlian, Jalan Hua Kiew, and Jalan Merlin was half-foot deep.

Pulau Kerto Road was still passable to vehicles.

Elsewhere, in Kampung Banyok, the water level had receded and its walkway was unaffected by the flood water.
