KUCHING: The multiracial community in Bau has been urged to preserve the tradition of living harmoniously with one another.

“The Chinese community has been living harmoniously with the Bidayuh and other races in Bau for decades or centuries. We have been like this since Bau existed.

“Bidayuh and other races continue to patronise shops and business outlets owned and operated by Chinese. On the other hand, Chinese, continue to provide employment for the locals, Bidayuh in particular, by opening up new businesses. New business means more opportunities for job employment,” said Tasik Biru assemblyman Datuk Henry Harry Jinep yesterday.

“We want the spirit of harmonious living to live on,” he added after his walkabout in Bau town to distribute Mandarin oranges and wish the Chinese community in Bau town a blessed 2019 Chinese New Year festival.

He said Bau had been able to prosper over the years because of the good inter-relations.

“As they say, unity is the key to success,” he added.

Henry said crowded roads and business outlets daily were strong indications that Bau town was fast developing and enjoying progress.

On the distribution of Mandarin oranges, he said it was a tradition since he became Tasik Biru assemblyman.

“Last year, we distributed the oranges to the poor Chinese family.

“This year, for a change, we give the oranges to the public in Bau town,” he added.

Henry said next year, his office would come out with something different.

Accompanying him to distribute the oranges yesterday were Pemanca Bong Jong Long, Penghulu Liew Chiew Hian, Kapitans Chai Kian Lip, Phang NyatKiaw, Ho Boon Fui, Kuan Soon Sen, Voon Jan Chin, Jee Ah Ming, Chung Man Fook and Low Blew Shin and councillors Richard Voon and Luke Piee.
