MIRI: Government agencies need to prioritise engagement with the public, said Deputy Minister of Digital Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong.

The Hulu Rajang MP stressed that without the support and involvement of the people, the government cannot function effectively.

Thus, he called on local authorities, such as the Resident’s Office, to ensure active participation from the community in governmental events.

“If there are no people, then there is no government,” he said in his speech at the opening of Gawai Dayak Bazaar 10.0 organised by Gagasan Anak Dayak Sarawak (GADS) in Miri last night (May 5).

He stressed that without the people’s support, roles such as District Officer or Resident would lack significance.

In his speech, Ugak also urged local government agencies to simplify procedures for obtaining licences, permits, and localities for Dayak organisations when applying to conduct bazaars.

Meanwhile, in response to grievances voiced by GADS, Ugak emphasised the need for government agencies to collaborate effectively to expedite the approval of locations, permits and licences, thereby making the process smoother for Dayak groups.

Commenting on the organisation of Gawai Dayak Bazaar 10.0 organised by GADS, which is entering its 10th year, he said the annual event is an important platform in fostering entrepreneurial spirit among Dayaks who participate.

The highly anticipated Gawai Dayak Bazaar 10.0 is set to run from May 1 to 25, with a showcase of Dayak culture, traditions and entrepreneurial flair.

At the event, Ugak allocated an amount totalling RM40,000 to GADS in support of their activities.

Also present was GADS chairman David Upe.
