KUCHING: Tambang operators in the state must put emphasis and prioritise on the safety of their boat passengers, said Demak Laut assemblyman Dr Hazland Abang Hipni.
It is crucial that both operator and passengers remain safe when the boat is in operation as it would prevent any untoward incidents and ensure that the people can go about their daily lives uninterrupted, he pointed out.
“Operators and passengers should prioritise their safety when using this service by using life jackets.
“Although the river distance is not too far, accidents can happen anywhere in a short period of time,” he told.
The people’s representative said this when met after presenting a total of 130 life jackets to ten Sungai Tapang-Balang tambang operators on Tuesday (Jan 19).
Commenting further, Dr Hazland also advised the tambang operators to adopt the conditional movement control order (CMCO) standard operating procedures (SOPs) issued by the authorities.
He said this measure had been implemented throughout the state to curb the spread of Covid-19.
He also stressed that tambang boats, like other transports, must also comply with the standard safety practices and SOPs.
“Each tambang boat is limited to twelve people including the skipper or according to the space on the boat,” he said.
