GULA APONG

PUSA: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said method of producing gula apong (nipah sugar) has to be improved because the product has entered Japan and Korea.

“We are producing gula apong for the Japanese and Korean markets. Our production method has to be improved. My ministry is working towards that at the moment,” said Uggah, who is also Agriculture Modernisation, Native Land and Regional Development Minister, when he spoke at the Rindok Digital programme at Dataran Tandang Sari here yesterday.

Kampung Tambak in Pusa has been touted as one of the best nipah palm sugar producers in Malaysia.

In other developments, Uggah said that the state government has provided an allocation of RM9.1 million for the Fishermen Rainy Season Aid (BMTN) which would benefit 6,078 fishermen.

He said that Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg is concerned about the livelihood of the group.

“Back then there was aid from Kuala Lumpur (Putrajaya), but now, sometimes it comes and sometimes it doesn’t.

“BMTN is worth RM300 a month and will be paid for a five-month period (November-March) during the rainy season,” he said.
