PUTRAJAYA: The professional recognition accorded to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) graduates is an added value that will contribute to acceptance by employers and industry, says the Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT) which is a professional body that recognises technologists and technicians as professionals.

MBOT president Datuk Dr Siti Hamisah Tapsir said professional recognition given to TVET graduates will open the door to more opportunities for employers in the public and private sectors to offer employment packages that support the government’s intention to empower the group.

She also said MBOT welcomes the government’s commitment to continue to empower TVET through initiatives tabled during Budget 2023 recently, which also revealed that although the employability rate of TVET graduates is 90 per cent,  90 per cent of them earn less than RM2,000 per month.

In her statement issued today, Siti Hamisah said the involvement of TVET talent must be enhanced in the industry value chain if Malaysia is to become a developed country soon.

“The initiative must be expanded in deep technology like advanced materials, artificial intelligence and big data,” she said.

Siti Hamisah said the government’s announcement regarding the collaboration between the private sector, especially in government-linked companies (GLC) and federal TVET institutions could also help TVET graduates meet industrial needs and be adequately rewarded.

There are more than 67,000 members who are registered with MBOT, including 20,000 professional technologists and certified technicians.

MBOT also recognises more than 800 technology and technical-related programs at institutions of higher learning that produce technologists and technicians.  – BERNAMA
