MUKAH: The proposed Batang Mukah riverbank protection project is pending approval by the state government.

Tellian assemblyman Yussibnosh Balo revealed this when asked on the updates of the proposed project.

“I have submitted a working paper from the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) to the chief minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg. It is now awaiting his approval,” he said to New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.

Yussibnosh disclosed that based on the working paper, the project is estimated to cost RM79.75 million and would involve the construction of sheetpile structure along the riverbank which measures about 1,450 metres long.

The total cost excludes the cost of land acquisition and moving out any existing structures. He also  explained that the proposed project was due to riverbank erosion.

“The annual rate of erosion is 0.5 metres. If no immediate action is taken to tackle the problem, the area will cease to exist.”

The project would benefit the people living along the riverbank, protect public facilities and its surrounding areas. It would also become an appropriate place for recreation and encourage local tourism.
