SEBUYAU: The Second Trunk Road (STR) project at the proposed construction of the highway from Sebuyau to Lingga, Samarahan and Sri Aman Divisions is expected to be completed in May 2025.

Infrastructure and Port Development Assistant Minister Datuk Julaihi Narawi said the project amounting RM495 million will allow road users to travel more comfortably, as well as shortening travel time and distance.

“We hope that the STR will bring a positive impact to the residents in the area for faster and greater socioeconomic development in Sebuyau along with its coastal areas,” he added.

He said this during a site visit at Jalan Sebuyau- Lingga (STR Project) in Sebuyau district yesterday (Oct 4).

He further noted that the road connectivity plans in the rural areas is a bold move taken by the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government.

“We believe that the roads are needed by the rural residents in the area. Hence, the state government has fully funded the STR projects,” he said.

Julaihi added that upon completion of the STR and the Coastal Road Network, the traveling distance of the Kuching–Sibu route would be reduced to 225km while the Kuching–Betong route would be reduced to only 142km.

“This will significantly reduce traveling time to almost 50 percent which offers substantial savings in time and cost.

“Meanwhile, upon completion of the highway from Sebuyau to Lingga — together with the proposed construction of Sungai Lingga Bridge and approach road located at Lingga in Sri Aman Division — road users from Samarahan to Sebuyau can freely travel to Sri Aman directly via Lingga without taking a long trip either via Pusa or Serian,” he said.

He added that the scope of the project comprises the construction of a 28.55km two-lane single carriageway road from the new Batang Lupar Bridge approach road at Sebuyau to the new bridge crossing Sungai Lingga (720m) inclusive of construction of two (50m each) minor bridges over Sungai Ligi and Sungai Parit.
