MIRI: Flash flood occurrence in areas throughout the Senadin constituency may be a thing of the past following the implementation of nine projects to improve its irrigation and drainage system.

Senadin assemblyman Datuk Lee Kim Shin said five of the projects are funded by the state government at RM320,000 while the rest are funded by the federal government costing RM720,000, bringing its total to RM1.04 million.

“Works have started since March 8,” he said.

The Transport Minister said the projects include the proposed river clearing works at Sungai Adong and Sungai Miri Kecil, clearing and desilting works of an existing earth drain at Jalan Indah 3, clearing of a stream at Jalan Perdana Tudan Desaras, clearing works of an earth drain at Tudan Phase 3 and 5, maintenance of a retention pond at Senadin Phase 7 and Curtin Water, clearing and desilting works of a pond at Permyjaya Wetland, and maintenance works of a retention pond at Senadin.

He said the initiative is being implemented following flash floods in the area last January.

“This is the time for us to carry out river and drainage cleaning works because right now is the dry season,” Lee said when met by reporters during a site visit at Sungai Adong here today (Mar 23).

Commenting on the river cleaning works at Sungai Adong, he said the project covers 6.2km of the river.

“Following our inspection, we found that there is a lot of water hyacinth (an aquatic plant) growing in Sungai Adong and this is why water cannot flow smoothly.

“We hope this area will not face flood issues in the future,” he added.
