KUCHING: Malaysia National Co-operative Movement (Angkasa) will be reaching out to the Malaysia Youth Council (MBM) and Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (Saberkas) in its effort to encourage more youth involvement in the cooperative movement.

Datuk Abdul Fattah Abdullah

Angkasa president Datuk Abdul Fattah Abdullah said Angkasa branches nationwide will be directed to approach the umbrella organisations of youth in their respective state to establish joint collaboration to promote cooperatives to the youth.

“We (Angkasa) with the help of Malaysia Cooperative Societies Commission (SKM) will approach the youth organisations in Sarawak namely MBM and Saberkas.

“We will discuss and propose to them on our idea to encourage youths in the state to venture into cooperatives,” he told reporters at a press conference after the closing ceremony of Global Youth Forum 2020 (GYF20) at Riverside Majestic hotel here on Thursday.

“Specifically for this proposal to MBM and Saberkas, we will be targeting youths who have left school and those who did not further their studies in any learning institutions.

“This will be another strategy to enhance continuation of cooperative members’ involvement after they leave school,” he said.

As of June last year, there were 208 youth cooperatives in the country with a membership of 81,199 people while as of December 2018, the total assets of youth cooperatives was about RM145 million with total share capital amounting to RM34 million and turnover of RM28 million.
