KUCHING: More than 600 programmes have been conducted through seven innovation hubs and five private sector partner hubs across Sarawak to date.

These are impacting entrepreneurs and innovators from students to adults.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said these hubs included those in partnership with Facebook and Serba Dinamik.

“In fact, a few of these startups are participating in government solutions for the people. The Qmunity app, which started as a corporate social responsibility (CSR) project by a startup, has now been tied together with Huawei to increase its usability with facial recognition capabilities,” he said.

He was officiating at the International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak (Idecs) 2020 held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here today.

The chief minister said the economy might not provide sufficient opportunities or assist promising entrepreneurs in the digital space.

According to him, this contributed to brain drain as innovators might shift abroad to commercialise their inventions.

“To address such scenarios, over the last two years, the state government has established a number of innovation hubs and digital villages comprising numerous co-working spaces that act as community nodes for entrepreneurs and to acquire support such as market access, intellectual property protection, access to investors, talent up-skilling, and more,” said Abang Johari.

At the same time, he said t the state government always welcomed local industries and global players to join them in developing the state’s digital economy and to participate in their journey to make Sarawak a developed state by 2030.
