Property owners must install awnings lawfully

Strong winds on Friday had flying the awnings from a building at Jalan Melayu. Fortunately no one was injured in the freak incident.

MIRI: Property owners who have made awning extensions at their business premises have again been reminded to get these endorsed by the Miri City Council in the interest of public safety.

They will also be required to take out a public safety liability insurance, it said in a statement on Saturday.

The council came up with guidelines on awning applications for commercial buildings in the year 2016 to mitigate the problem of awnings installed illegally by business owners.

The main objective of is to ensure public safety is taken into due consideration whenever such structure is being erected.

In light of an incident on March 24 (Friday)  that occurred at Jalan Melayu, the council has reminded business owners to submit applications for their awning extensions for registration, should they have not done so.

It also advised owners to dismantle unauthorised awnings immediately if the structures are found to be unsafe to the public.
