KUCHING: School term holidays are important and relevant for the students to relax their minds from the pressure of learning.

Sarawak Bumiputera Teachers Union (KGBS) president Ahmad Malie said if learning is continued without a holiday, this may weaken the students’ spirit and interest in education.

He was responding to Malaysian Parents’ Consensus (Mimbar)’s recent proposal to abolish the school term holidays as a chance for the students to catch up with the lessons they were falling behind on.

Ahmad said despite the fact that the students are lagging behind in their education due to Covid-19 pandemic, the holidays are still relevant and necessary.

“KGBS wishes to stress that learning should not continue without relaxing the minds of the students.

“If learning is continued without a holiday, KGBS is worried that it will have a negative effect on the minds of the students and can also weaken the students’ spirit to learn,” he said.

He said this when speaking at a press conference held at KGBS office located at Jalan Matang here today.

He added that taking into account the factors of psychological impact on students, the Union remains opposed to the proposal to abolish all school term holidays.

Also present during the press conference were KGBS vice president I, Raden Amri, deputy president Adzuddin Mantrang and other executive members.
