KUALA LUMPUR: The Council of Eminent Persons will soon announce among others, a proposal to control the price of goods to ensure their market price matches the zero rated Goods and Services Tax (GST).

One of the council’s five members, Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz said the announcement would be made by council chairman, Tun Daim Zainuddin.

“But I don’t know the time frame,” she told reporters when met after the council’s daily briefing sessions here yesterday.

She was asked on whether there would be an announcement by the council on a mechanism to control the price of goods after the tax was zero rated. The GST was zero-rated effective June 1.

However, there were reports on social media that the price of goods became more expensive, if not remained the same as when the tax was six per cent.

Zeti, who was former Bank Negara Governer, explained that Daim would also announce the council’s proposals on some other matters soon. – Bernama
