SIMUNJAN: Proposals for the construction of a new building for Simunjan Hospital needs to be listed first in the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) in the fourth rolling plan.

Deputy Health Minister Lukanisman Awang Sauni emphasised that priority would be given to very urgent projects such as the new Simunjan Hospital.

He added that the State Health Department has submitted 18 other project proposals to the ministry.

“These projects will be shortlisted, we are waiting for a positive outcome after the meeting regarding the selection of 12MP projects to be decided in the next few months.

“Priority will be given to clinics and hospitals that need attention.

“Related basic issues will also be given focus, including poor health clinics and the need for doctors in hospitals and clinics, especially in rural areas,” he said.

He said this during a press conference after visiting the Women and Child Health Clinic and Simunjan Hospital here yesterday (Jan 7).

On the same note, Lukanisman said Simunjan Hospital’s landslide was reported to have subsided in a distance of 0.51 metres.

As such, he pointed out that the land site for the proposed new hospital has been identified, and there are two site options.

Lukanisman then noted that Sarawak’s subpar healthcare facilities required attention.

“In Sarawak, public health is a necessity, and we have a problem with inadequate medical facilities as well as residential quarters.

“It must be addressed, and it occurred at Simunjan Hospital. Some promised medical equipment has arrived, and some are still waiting for the application and tender process,” he said.

Lukanisman, who is also Sibuti MP, asserted that he would consistently bring up health issues and keep the spotlight on inadequate clinics.

He added that focus would continue to be placed on the need for more staff, notably the shortage of doctors in hospitals and clinics, particularly in rural areas.
