KUCHING: Hawkers at public markets are urged to participate in the rat control campaign by constantly practising cleanliness to avoid rat-borne diseases.

In an effort to spread awareness, Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) organised the ‘Gotong-Royong Pembersihan Pasar Awam’ programme at the Kota Padawan public market, Batu 10 here, on Monday (Aug 1).

According to a statement, the programme emphasised, among others, the importance of rat control and carrying out activities to study the Rat Index through the installation of traps, the installation of Matikus poison, identifying rat routes, and the distribution of leaflets.

“This kind of programme is to ensure that hawkers always maintain cleanliness at their stalls in order to avoid the breeding of rodents and subsequently avoid rat-borne diseases such as leptospirosis.

“Even though the market recorded a Level 1 rat index rate (which is low), control and monitoring actions need to be carried out continuously to avoid the presence of rats in the future,” said MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang.

He added that in order to further increase the level of awareness of hawkers and the public, announcements were also carried out on MPP’s Facebook, and the distribution of leaflets and installation of posters in the area.
